Underwear. Socks. T-shirts.
That is the heartbreakingly simple Christmas wish list of a needy five-year-old child provided by Families First of Georgia.
A single mother of three left her list blank, but for her daughters she asked for books, dolls and clothes. There is also a request for a toddler bed.
Every year, Families First of Georgia connects sponsors with their clients in need through the Adopt-A-Family program. And for more than a decade, the agents and staff of Dorsey Alston REALTORS have adopted several families, helping to spread a little holiday cheer.
Families First of Georgia provides a profile and detailed list for each of their clients. Sponsors like Dorsey Alston then “adopt” the family and purchases the items on their list. The gifts are delivered to the main office on West Peachtree Street, and Families First staff deliver the gifts to the families before the holidays. This ensures their privacy and their dignity.
At Dorsey Alston REALTORS, there is a directive from the top office to support causes focused on families and children, with an emphasis on education. As result, Dorsey Alston has developed a long-standing relationship with one of the families they have helped over the years that extends beyond the holiday season.
Families First of Georgia assists more than 40,000 children and families each year with solutions that aim to improve child well-being and family self-sufficiency
It was established in 1890 as an orphanage serving Atlanta’s most vulnerable residents on the Westside of the city on what is now the Spelman campus. In 1937, Families First of Georgia became the first licensed adoption agency in the state. In 1964, Families First opened the first group home (now called cooperatives) for young people in the state, and in 1989 it developed a curriculum that more than 200 communities across the country use to help divorcing parents learn how to co-parent their children.
It is committed to setting up youth for success by young adulthood by providing key services to overcome life's challenges and helping them to set and reach their goals.
Dorsey Alston is humbled to lend a hand each year and to support the important, life-changing work of Families First of Georgia.
